A Step-by-Step Guide

Measuring photos and prints that are printed to the edge, also known as borderless printing, requires precision to ensure that the dimensions are accurate. This guide provides a step-by-step approach to measure such images correctly.

Tools Required
  • Metal measuring tape
  • Flat surface
  • Pen and paper

Step-by-Step Measurement Process
Step 1: Prepare the Workspace

Find a flat and clean surface to lay down the photo or print. Ensure there is enough space around the image for easy measurement.

Step 2: Align the Image

Place the photo or print flat on the surface. Ensure it is properly aligned and not bent or curled at the edges, as this can affect the accuracy of your measurements.

Step 3: Measure the Width

Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure the width of the image from one edge to the opposite edge. Make sure the ruler is aligned evenly with the edges to avoid any measurement discrepancies. Note the width on a piece of paper if needed.

Step 4: Measure the Height

Similarly, measure the height of the image from the top edge to the bottom edge. Ensure the ruler is straight and aligned correctly. Record this measurement as well.

Step 5: Double-check Measurements

To ensure accuracy, repeat the measurements of both the width and height. This step helps confirm that the dimensions are consistent and accurate.

Additional Tips

Handle prints carefully: Avoid touching the print surface with dirty or greasy hands, as this can damage the image.

By following these steps, you can accurately measure photos and prints that are printed to the edge, ensuring that their dimensions are precise for framing, reproduction, or other purposes.

Conclusion

Measuring a photo or print for framing is a straightforward process that, when done correctly, ensures a perfect fit and an impressive display. By following these steps and avoiding common mistakes, you can confidently frame your artwork and enjoy it for years to come. Remember, the key to a beautiful framed piece lies in the accuracy of your measurements and the quality of your framing materials. Happy framing!

Video Timeline
The Ground Rules- 0:09
  • Always use a reliable metal tape measure instead of a fabric/cloth tape measure commonly used for sewing. Fabric tape measures can often be quite imprecise, and if you make an error in measurement by even a few millimetres, you might discover that the frame or mount does not accommodate the print correctly.
  • Measure everything twice and be precise, or have someone else verify the figures.
Measure The Exact Width And Height - 0:28
  • Measure the exact width and height before noting down the sizes.
  • Trim the print if you only want to see part of the image before measuring the width and height.
Ordering Frames And Mounts - 1:11
  • If you order a frame without a mount, the frame will be manufactured so your print fits perfectly into the opening at the back of the frame. The frame rebate will overlap the edges of your print by approximately 5mm on each side.
  • If you order a frame with a mount, the mount will overlap the edges of your print by 3mm on each side. The mount will fit perfectly into the opening at the back of the frame.
  • The frame and mount option assumes you DO NOT select the EXACT SIZE option for the mount as you will need the mount opening to overlap your print by 3mm on each side to ensure it doesn't fall through.
