How to Fit a Canvas Board in a St Ives Float Frame
Tools & Materials You'll Need
- St Ives Float Frame (standard or wide profile)
- Your canvas board
- High-quality double-sided VHB tape
- Tape measure
- Clean hands (or gloves)
Step-by-Step Fitting Guide
- Check the Frame Size
Before starting, confirm your frame is the correct size. You should have approximately a 15mm gap (standard profile) or 25mm gap (wide profile) around all sides of your canvas board for the perfect float effect.
- Apply VHB Tape
Run a continuous line of quality double-sided VHB tape along the four lower ledges inside the frame.
- Peel the Protective Film
Carefully peel back the tape liner, exposing a small section of the sticky surface to begin with.
- Position Your Canvas Board
Gently lower your canvas board into the frame. Take your time to get the placement just right.
- Check the Gaps
Visually inspect that the gaps look even all around. Then use a tape measure to confirm the spacing is consistent on all four sides. Make any small adjustments while the tape is only partially exposed.
- Secure the Board
Once perfectly positioned, press gently near the exposed tape. Remove the remaining protective film, then apply firm, even pressure around the entire board to ensure a strong bond.
- Add Hanging Fixtures
Attach your preferred hanging hardware (D-rings, sawtooth hangers, etc.) to the back of the frame.
Final Step – Enjoy Your Artwork!
Hang your newly framed piece in pride of place and enjoy it for years to come. The St Ives float frame gives a modern, gallery-style finish that really makes your art stand out.
Top Tip: Always work on a clean, flat surface and handle the frame and canvas with clean hands to avoid marks.
