Holiday snaps, images of your favourite landscapes, family photos and art prints... The perfectly placed framed photos can give any living space a real "home sweet home" feeling. If done correctly, these images can provide a fantastic personal atmosphere that creates a real sense of warmth.
However, having the best photographs in the world does not guarantee they will look spectacular next to one another, especially when they are on your wall.
So, with that in mind, what is the best way to arrange and present your pictures? When it comes to hanging and presenting pictures, there are many different methods that you can choose from. Deciding what images to hang on your wall is entirely up to you. The general rule of thumb, "anything goes, as long as you like it". Nonetheless, here are a few things you may want to keep in mind when creating your gallery wall.
For your pictures to harmonize with your furniture, you have to consider the proportions. When you have large pieces of furniture, it is very easy for smaller images to get lost in the background. On the other side of the coin, images that are too large can also feel a bit clunky and overbearing. Another simple tip to remember is walls that are not white are great for displaying photos. If the wall colour, pictures and accessories/ furnishings contain similar tones of colour they can work exceptionally to bring the whole room together.
Images that are on a white background you can't go wrong with either, however, do bear in mind that art on patterned or multicoloured walls won't live up to its potential. If you find that your feature wall is patterned or multicoloured, try putting your photo in a striking frame that can be used to balance out the image against the backdrop.
Mixing and matching frames of different styles will give your room a unique sense of personality. As long as you make sure that the different frames don't clash too much... Try and keep consistency, for example, use all timber frames or all white frames, but any shape or size or style will still work. Also with the images themselves, you can make sure they all follow a certain theme such as seascapes or different cities at night.
So how does one go about hanging a framed image to make the biggest impact? Hang it at eye level! it may sound like a simple one, but you will be surprised how many households miss this simple step. There is a catch though, you need to consider if the images are going to be viewed when either standing or when seated. When you are hanging your images, try to position them along lines, this could mean using existing contours in the room such as door frames, furniture, windowsills etc.
You could even create imagery reference lines. If you are looking to hang a larger image on the side of the room, it is important to have an equally prominent feature such an armchair that almost acts like a visual counterbalance. Another thing to remember is that a vertically arranged image will make your walls appear taller, and horizontally grouped images will make the room look and feel wider.
Art doesn't have to be centred, after all, there are no straight lines in nature so why does there have to be with art? When hanging your framed art try hanging it off centre on a wall and counterbalance it with a floor lamp or tall plant on the other side to fill the empty space. This tip also works exceedingly well with smaller artworks!
Before you place anything on the wall, layout each artwork on the floor to see if they aesthetically go together. The floor also allows you to move images about so you can achieve the right combination. Feel free to take measurements... but this is art, after all, you can rely on your eye to set the height as framed art doesn't always look right if it fits too perfectly. You can always get someone to hold up the artwork so that you can establish the best place for it to hang within the group.
Have a look at the patters in the room where you are planning on having your feature wall. You could pick up on a pattern in abstract art and then echo that through your cushions and upholstery so that they tastefully complement each other. Using your artwork as a starting point for your colour scheme will give your room a very considered and unified feel.
If you don't have much wall space or you're hesitant about fulling committing to the ideas that you have regarding your art, there are other ways to display it rather than just hanging it! Pictures rails are another fantastic way to display images on your wall, also you don't have to worry about hammering nails into your walls. It also gives you the flexibility to move around certain images and try out different looks all without damaging your walls.
