A picture frame... the perfect gift?

Giving a framed photo can be the ultimate gift to a family member, close friend or even a work colleague. It's both special and personal and can make a wonderful impression when given to the right person. Whether it's a photo of a loved one, a snapshot of a fantastic holiday or even a piece of their favourite artwork, a framed photograph is that perfect something that can really take someone's breath away.

Framed picture

It doesn't just have to be a period frame or an antique frame to hold a personal value. Any picture frame can be made personal by adding your own artistic flair to it, this could be a unique marking that can commemorate a special occasion such as birthday, christening or even a wedding day.

Below are a handful of ideas that we have put together to help you make your framed gifts more personal.

Picture frame with a personal message

When many of us send gives, we tend to accompany them with a handwritten card which expresses congratulations, well wishes or gratitude. A great idea is to replace the card and write a personal message directly on the framed picture itself. A good place to do this is usually on the card backing of the frame. Not only is this more personal but also gives the piece a little more depth as it can be hidden where it can remain a special secret sentiment that only you and the receiver know about for many years to come.

For picture frames, the backing is called a mounting board or backing board. This board allows you to write on it using things such as pen, markers or pencils. However, if you are using pen or ink, be sure to check it doesn't bleed or show through.

How about a mat board?

For those of you who are scratching your head and thinking to yourself, "what on earth is a mat board?" it is essentially a piece of cardboard-like material that sits in between the frame and your chosen artwork which gives it more of a finished look.

Writing a personalised message on the mat board is perfect way to really take a gift to the next level and leave a lasting impression. Be aware, however, as lovely as it is to leave a personal touch to a gift, you need to make sure that you use a pen that will not fade over time. In our own experience, we have found that a pen that has "pigment ink" is your best bet. Using ballpoint pens and other alternatives often use an ink called dye ink... this would be no good as the ink will bleed into the material. To be 100% certain, try to use gel pens or any other pen that is labelled "pigment pen"

Try adding a lick of paint

Just because you buy a picture frame in a certain colour, it doesn't mean you can't change it or enhance it. Many picture frames come in certain colours but try to broaden your creativity and create something different. You can bring any picture frame to life with paint and really let your creative juices flow.

Here are some interesting ways that you can change your frame-up by using paint:

  • Add meaningful messages around the frame to create something that is lasting between you and the person you are giving it to.
  • Paint different shapes on the frame to make it look more interesting.
  • Stencilling is another unique thing that you can do to try and give the frame an interesting dimension.
  • Use painters’ tape to create interesting geometric shapes and patterns
  • Use different paints and brushes to create a wonderful ombre effect.

If you're unsure how to paint a picture frame, you can contact us directly by phoning us or dropping us a line on social media and we will be more than happy to help.

Don't leave your frame empty

If you are giving a picture frame as a gift, be sure that you don't leave it empty. Try to think of something that you can use even if it is just temporary, this could be anything from a handwritten note, a magazine clipping, a postcard or even a hand-drawn picture from a child to a loved one.

It's always a good idea to do this as it showcases the frame in its entirety and will give the receiver more of an insight as to what the frame will look like with a photograph or piece of art within the frame.

Use a frame to showcase what the real gift is

Remember, even though a picture frame is a wonderful gift on its own, it doesn't always have to be the main gift. In some cases, you can use a picture frame to add an extra boost and enhance the look and feel of what you are giving to the receiver. Use it to really show off that special gift that is being given.

For example, perhaps you are planning on giving a loved one tickets to their favourite music concert, why not instead of giving them the tickets in an envelope, give them the tickets in a frame that will make much more of an impact. This is a unique way to enhance a gift also showcases what you are giving to them at the same time.

You'll want to frame whatever you buy. Any good framers will be able to show you a vast range of different solutions and advise on what might be the most suitable given the work and its proposed location.
