When it comes to decorating your home, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first is that, no matter how stylish your furnishings, wallpaper and paint choices, there's just something sad about a bare wall. The second is that injecting your own personality into your interiors is a must. Opt for framed photos, prints and posters, in other words - but just make sure they reflect your unique identity.
If you're more likely to go to the cinema than to an art gallery, for instance, you might be best served finding a fantastic film poster to put in a picture frame and hang on your wall. After all, there are some brilliant ones to choose from...
Steven Spielberg's Jaws is an iconic film is so many ways. With its terrifyingly simple and effective theme music, experimental camera-work and memorable lines like "you're gonna need a bigger boat", it's a film that has rightly gone down in history as a seminal classic. Even the poster itself is a work of art. In it, the terrifying head of our eponymous fanged killer hovers underwater, biting distance from a lithe young swimmer. Throw in the blood red title and solid black background and you have one of the most simple, eye-catching and terrifying posters of all time. Our advice? Stick it in a slim black picture frame and hang it next to your DVD collection - all your guests will know you have great taste as soon as they enter the room.
North by Northwest, Rear Window, Psycho, The Birds...you name something by Alfred Hitchcock and there's a good chance it's listed as one of the greatest movies of all time. Famous for directing films that grappled with the human psyche, Hitchcock was also a great stylist. In fact, even if you haven't seen Vertigo, there's a good chance you're familiar with its poster. Created by graphic designer Saul Bass, the striking red, white and black image depicts a man and woman, on the verge of an embrace that could either be loving or deadly. Turning away from the viewer, they tumble away into a swirling vortex - an image that beautifully captures the thrilling, unnerving, and often stomach-churning depths of this enigmatic film. This is one to hang in a study, in a minimalist white picture frame.
This influential - if ever-so-slight cheesy - sports drama from the 70s is known and loved by people all around the world. Perhaps most famous for its fist-pumping theme, "Eye of the Tiger", and a scene in which the hero races up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it's also notable for making Sylvester Stallone a Hollywood star. One of our favourite things about this classic movie, though, is its black and white poster, which depicts the triumphant Rocky, arms raised, alongside the memorable tagline: "His whole life was a million-to-one shot". Part of the reason this is an excellent poster to hang in your home is that it's black and white, meaning it'll go with any colour scheme, picture frame and room. Our first choice, though, would be a personal gym - or least the room where you keep that dusty yoga mat and weights...
The Indiana Jones films are some of the most beloved in history. But, like most franchises, it's the first film that people know and love best. Harrison Ford stars as history professor, adventurer and artefact hunter Jones, who battles Nazis, escapes boulders, faces a pit of snakes, and falls in love - all while searching for the mystical Ark of the Covenant. Several posters exist for the film, but our favourite depicts Indy standing straight on, staring out with his familiar grin, whip raised and shirt open - ready for action, in other words. In the background sit a colourful assortment of love interests, enemies, temple pillars and the Ark itself. Put this bright, busy poster in a sleek wooden frame and hang it on your hallway - that way, you'll be inspired to go out and have an adventure every single day.
In the 60s, petite actress Audrey Hepburn was the person every woman wanted to be, and every man wanted to be with. In her most iconic role, Hepburn played the eccentric, spirited and pixie-like Holly Golightly, a socialite with her heart set on marrying someone rich, who ends up falling for a penniless writer instead. Today, the film might be most famous for its poster, which shows Holly in her most celebrated outfit - a long black dress, huge diamond necklace and evening gloves. With its beautiful illustration and colourful pop-art inspired border, it's the dream poster for fans of old Hollywood romance and 60s glamour, with just the right amount of sparkle. This one deserves an elegant gold picture frame and a prime spot in the bedroom - after all, we all need some style inspiration in the morning.
If we've inspired you to go out and nab some classic film posters to decorate your home, just remember there are a few rules when it comes to getting it right. When choosing a film poster, you'll want to make sure you order the right size - full-sized posters can overwhelm a cramped space, so save bigger prints for hallways or open-plan rooms. Smaller prints, though, can make the perfect addition to a bathroom, bedroom, study or even kitchen (we're thinking Chocolat or Ratatouille?)
The other thing to consider is whether you want to use a picture mount. Most film posters will have a border, which means they might look perfect without a mount. And don't forget that the bigger and busier the poster, the less eye-catching your picture frame needs to be - don't be afraid to keep it simple with a narrow black or white style.
